BC TEAL Conference, April 27, 2013
In this 90-minute workshop, we will explore and 'play' with some online tools to help students practice oral skills/pronunciation. You will need to sign up for two of the three tools (it is free) - if this is a concern or you have any questions, please come and see me.
By the end of this workshop, I hope you will have the skills to use these tools as well as a host of ideas for how to use them with with your learners in meaningful ways.

| Why use these tools? What's the connection to brain-based learning? |
Click on the images below to get to the websites for Vocaroo, Soundcloud, and Voicethread.
1) Vocaroo
Step 1: Click here to listen to an example of instructor feedback on a student's oral journal recording.
Step 2: Click here to watch a short tutorial on how to use Vocaroo. I created this for my CLB2-3 level students and they were able to succesfully send me recordings via Vocaroo.
Step 3: Now it's your turn! Record a 1-minute introduction of yourself, and include some questions for your listener. Once you are finished, e-mail it to me and the address that I gave you. Also e-mail it to yourself so you have a copy.
Step 4: Check your e-mail inbox, listen to the vocaroo recording that should be in your inbox, and record a short reply back and e-mail it to that person.
2) SoundCloud
Step 1: Click on the image above to go to the SoundCloud site. Click 'sign up' and register.
Step 2: Click here to see an example of how a teacher is using Soundcloud with her students. Click on the orange 'play' icon to play the recording.
Step 3: Listen to a SoundCloud story and leave a comment. Here's a short but powerful one from StoryCorps: StoryCorps 219: Beyond Belief
(To leave a comment, look for the light grey 'leave a comment' box underneath the soundtrack. Click in the box and type your comment, then press return)
Step 4: Record your own SoundCloud: (Suggested topics: Your reactions to the story you just listened to / If I won the lottery..../The best way to de-stress and recharge.../My thoughts about the upcoming provincial election...etc) and send the link to Sara and a co-participant.
Step 5: Check your e-mail inbox and listen to your co-participant's SoundCloud. Leave a message or two somewhere along the recording.
3) VoiceThread
Step 1: Click here to see an example of how VoiceThread has been used with adult ESL learners.
Step 2: Click on the image above to go to the VoiceThread site. Click 'sign up' and register.
Step 2: View/Listen to a Voicethread that I created 'What are you proud of?' and share one thing about yourself that you are proud of.
Step 3: (Time permitting...) Create your own voicethread and share it with one or two co-participants & Sara. Use only one or two slides.
Some extra stuff...
